Beginning in 300A.D. and continuing through 1990, this work outlines major events in African-American history chronologically.

Salzman, J. (Ed.). (1996). Encyclopedia of African-American culture and history. New York: Simon & Schuster. (XE185 .E54 1996 v.1-5).

An extensive five-volume work, this encyclopedia presents an alphabetical arrangement of topics. There are many entries on individuals; some include a portrait illustration. All entries conclude with references. Volume 5 offers 150 pages of statistical data, an index to the biographical entries by profession, and a standard index.

American history

Dougherty, J. J. (Ed.). (1962-1980). Writings on American history: a subject bibliography of articles. Washington, D.C.: American Historical Association. (XZ 1236 .D68 1962-1980).

Current periodical literature is covered on a worldwide basis in recent volumes. Many volumes contain annotations, with citations to critical reviews found in pre-World War II volumes. Annual volumes have individual indexes.

This source lists events arranged chronologically on two facing pages. Four columns comprise the whole field of American culture.

This source has become the standard in its field. The revised edition has seven volumes plus an index, and has expanded its coverage on science and technology, native Americans, and Afro-Americans, to now include over 6,000 entries.

This edition lists books and articles that were published as of June, 1970. "The Guide" is a good source for instruction on research methods and the mechanics of applying research in writing term papers, theses, etc.

Historical Abstracts [on campus]
1954 to the present: Information on articles, books, and dissertations about non-U.S. and non-Canadian history from 1450 to the present. Covers more than 2000 journals in 50 languages. Includes links to full text of selected journal articles.

 

Humanities Abstracts [on-campus]
Coverage: 1984 - present. Indexes/abstracts articles in archaeology, art, classics, film, folklore, journalism, linguistics, music, the performing arts, philosophy, religion, world history, and world literature.

Soc Index with full text (Ebsco)
This index features more than 1,300,000 records with subject headings from a 15,600 term sociology-specific thesaurus designed by expert lexicographers. This product also contains informative abstracts for more than 620 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895. In addition, this file provides data mined from from more than 500 "priority" coverage journals as well as over 1,390 "selective" coverage journals. Further, extensive indexing for books, monographs, conference papers, and other sources is included.

This work divides history into eight periods (prehistoric, medieval, recent, etc.). Each period except the first is subdivided geographically and then often chronologically. This source displays all important names, events, terms, inventions, places, etc., in boldface type within entries so readers can quickly scan pages. There are also many maps, and genealogical tables, and an appendix of lists. This compendium provides an excellent basis for selection of research topics.
