Langsdale ILL Policy

INTERLIBRARY LOAN BORROWING POLICY

The purpose of interlibrary loan is to provide for the University community that research information which is not available at our University libraries.

The University community is defined as current University of Baltimore students, faculty, staff member or joint program students. Students, faculty and staff affiliated with the Law School will be directed to the Law Library. Alumni do not have interlibrary loan privileges.

For help on using ILL, please see our Guide

AVAILABLE MATERIAL

Materials that are normally available through interlibrary loan include:

  • books, government documents, and selected dissertations and theses not available at the Langsdale Library, UB Law Library or through the USM Request function in Aleph, the University System online catalog.
  • journal/newspaper articles not available at the Langsdale Library, UB Law Library, or full-text online.
  • Materials that are not usually available for loan include most dissertations and theses, reference books, genealogical materials, rare or fragile items, and in most instances, AV material. Whole issues of journals are not available for borrowing. Restrictions may also apply to the borrowing of textbooks and newly published materials.

REQUESTING MATERIAL

Requests can be submitted through the Langsdale ILL Express page of library web page.

Requests will not be accepted over the phone. Hand-carried services are not available.

LOAN PERIODS

The lending library determines the loan period and any other restrictions, such as IN LIBRARY USE ONLY. Materials are picked up at the Circulation Desk. Books are to be returned to the Reference Desk by the due date noted. Patrons can generally keep photocopies of articles or chapters of books.

Renewals must be requested through the UB ILL staff a week before the due date. UB patrons are subject to the terms of the lending library concerning recalls or renewals. Overdue books may effect a patron’s borrowing privileges.

The University of Baltimore does not charge for the ILL borrowing service. Any charges incurred for the request and shipment of materials are absorbed by the Library. However, UB patrons are responsible for any fines due to overdue, lost, or damaged material. Any outstanding fines may jeopardize a patron’s borrowing privileges with the USM as well as with the interlibrary loan service.

ILL REQUESTS

Encourage patrons to use the ILL request function in the databases, or to fill out the e-ill form on our web page. Paper request forms are in the LH reference desk drawer. We can accept more than 10 requests at once, contrary to what the form states. We guarantee that at least 10 requests will be processed in a week. We can accept any number of requests at one time, as long as the patron understands that they will not be processed all at once. Patron should indicate priority when submitting a large number of requests. Be sure the form is completed properly, including citation source. Place completed forms in the ILL in-box, located behind the student’s desk.
