Goodbye From The Current Director
by Steve LaBash
In place of my regular “From the Director’s Desk” column, I would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to all of my friends at UB. I will be retiring at the end of June. During my tenure at Langsdale Library, which began in 1984, I have witnessed many significant changes.
When I arrived at UB, all the library's indexes were paper, and using them to find an article was a laborious process. We used a card catalog (if you don’t know what that is, contact me!) to locate books, and an overhead projector and transparencies in our classes. Now, we can search the World Wide Web for information, access thousands of articles in electronic databases, and our instruction classes are held in state-of-the-art “smart” classrooms. Last year, we also dramatically improved the physical space in the Library with a major renovation, the first in 30 years!
What hasn’t changed, however, is the skill and dedication of the library’s staff. From the first moment of my arrival until today, the staff has committed itself to providing quick and efficient service to the University community. We have always emphasized our commitment to providing you with the best service in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
Leaving UB will be difficult and it would be impossible to thank the many Langsdale Library staff, faculty, and administrators past and present who have contributed to our success. I know that the library staff will continue serving you at the highest level. When the new Library Director arrives, she will find a dynamic, innovative, and growing library and University.
I wish you all well and hope you are successful in all of your endeavors.
