The bibliography, “Writings of Ernst Kris,” which appeared in the 1958 issue of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, lists the citations of Kris’ writings on art history, psychoanalytic theory, Nazi propaganda as well as his review of books. Abstracts of Kris’ articles, which appeared in The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, can be located in the volume The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, v. 1-25 – Abstracts and Index. Abstracts of Kris’ analytic writings as well as articles pertaining to the analysis of Nazi propaganda can be located in Psychological Abstracts. Based upon a reading of Kris’ writings, my objectives were to write descriptive annotations, provide a biographical outline, and list Kris’ reviews of books in order to give a complete picture of Kris’ professional work in a single location. No attempt is made to interpret the readings, but rather to highlight and summarize the major points of Kris’ writings. In addition, collegial reminiscences are not included.
Many of the citations in the “Writings of Ernst Kris” contained errors, however, and many articles were unavailable through interlibrary loan services in the United States. As a result, I worked with several different librarians abroad as well as the Maryland Interlibrary Loan Organization (MILO).
