Langsdale Presence in Sakai

With the implementation of UB's new learning management system, Sakai, fully underway, Langsdale is working closely with OTS to have a fully functional site within Sakai. We hope that this will make it easy for students to access electronic reserves, search databases and ask librarians questions.

sakai screen

Students will find a Langsdale tab after their course tabs on the main Sakai page. There will be links to course reserves, course library guides, student library account information and other useful information. Students will have an opportunity to chat with a librarian if they have questions and can search the catalog for books or Academic Search Premier for articles. They can connect to PsycInfo from Sakai as well.

Signing in Has Never Been Easier

As we try to integrate the library's online systems with those of the University (like Sakai) we are close to implementing what we call "single sign on;" we hope to have it in place by mid-fall. We have been working with UM College Park and our own OTS staff to have our system accept authenticiation from the UB log in, so that you and your students may use your UBID to log into the databases rather than your library barcode number! Staff will still scan barcodes to check out materials, but you will not have to find your barcode just to log into the databases again!

Langsdale Launches New Website

We've been working tirelessly all summer to prepare for the website migration to the new UB site this fall. We have tried to streamline services and search features to make it easier for you and your students to find and get what you need in the way of answers and materials.

library website

The primary search box on the front page allows you to search for books in the catalog, articles from Academic Search Premier, journal titles from our Journal Finder or pages from our website. You'll notice that there are a series of quick links near the center of the page that are targeted to faculty, students and guests.

Still, as is the case with all new sites, we've missed a few things and we're looking for bugs. Please contact our webmaster, Bill Helman, if you encounter a problem.

Recommend your students for Inspired Discoveries Research Symposium

Plans are already underway for the third annual Inspired Discoveries Symposium of Undergraduate Research and Creative Works on April 27, 2012. Langsdale Library, in collaboration with the Office of the Provost and the Helen P. Denit Honors Program, will sponsor the day-long symposium and will begin to accept applications late in the fall semester through March for the April event. Psychology undergraduates often engage in original research and are excellent candidates for the symposium.

Last year, 24 students presented 11 research or creative projects, including four psychology projects. This year, we hope to have more students participate with poster sessions as well as individual and panel presentations. If you have students working on original research this fall and want an opportunity to present, either as practice for a later conference or as additional experience, please consider nominating them for the 2011 symposium.

Celebration of Faculty Authorsfaculty authors logo

Join us on Thursday, October 27 when we will recognize colleagues who have published books in the last two years. At our last Faculty Author Celebration we honored Sally Farley for her book, Wait! I wasn't finished... : The effect of conversational interruption on perceptions of power and likability. This year the celebration is being held in conjunction with the Provost, who is sponsoring a Publisher in Residence program. Throughout the week there will be workshops and individual consultations for faculty on the publishing process; the faculty author recognition will serve as the culminating event of the week.

If you have written or edited a book in the last two years, please contact me or Natalie Burclaff by Friday, September 30; if not, please join us on October 27 to celebrate with your colleagues.

Faculty READS

Have you read any good books lately? As you'll see in our spring issue of the Langsdale Link, we’re looking for faculty book recommendations to share. These can be books in your field or just titles (fiction and non-fiction) you've read for fun. Let us know what you’ve read and why you think others would like it. We’ll be posting book recommendations weekly on the Langsdale Library website. Submit yours all semester long at http://goo.gl/lQqAv.
