Make an Appointment

Signing up to meet with a tutor, writing consultant or academic coach is simple.

  1. Register with or log in to our online appointment system using your @ubalt.edu email.
  2. Search for a subject and time that works for you.

All appointments are made using this online system, but you can choose to meet with our staff in-person or virtually.

Can't make it to campus? Some coaches, tutors and writing consultants are available to meet with you online.

  • Schedule an Online Appointment on ALC's Appointment System

    Some of our staff members are available for both face-to-face and online appointments, while others may only be available for one or the other. If you want to schedule an online appointment, please make sure to select a consultant who accepts them.

    Look below a staff member's name to see what type of appointments they accept:

    If you choose a consultant who is available for both face-to-face and online appointments, be sure to select Yes - Meet Online in the Meet Online? drop-down menu:

  • Video Chat Instructions for ALC's Appointment System

    Equipment/Hardware: You will need a webcam, a microphone and speakers to use this option.
    Browsers: You will need to use either Firefox or Chrome. Internet Explorer will not work.

    If you are using this feature for the first time, please log in 10 minutes before your session to set up your audio and video equipment.

    Step 1: Start/Join the Online Conversation
    • Sign in to the Online Appointment System.
    • Double-click the appointment box for that day and time, usually indicated in yellow.
    • A new window with your appointment information will open.
    • Click the red hyperlink that reads Start or Join Online Consultation.

    Step 2: Set Up Your Camera and/or Microphone

    If you are using Firefox:
    You will be asked which camera and microphone you would like to use. Please select the appropriate devices.

    If you are using Chrome:
    You will need to click on Allow at the top of your browser so you will be able to use your camera and microphone.

    Once your camera and microphone are connected you can click on the camera icon to make the window larger or smaller.

    Step 3: Paste Any Text in the Whiteboard Space (Writing Consultations)
    The center of the new window is an interactive whiteboard. This is the main interface where you and the consultant will work on your paper.

    When you log in, it should contain general information about video and text chat that you should read. After you delete this text, you can copy and paste your text from a Microsoft Word document. It will look something like this:

    You'll want to make the highlight disappear by clicking the icon at the top of the page that looks like an eye with a line through it:

    After this point, any changes that you make will have one color and your consultant's comments will have a different color. You can select your color by clicking the icon in the upper right corner, at which point you will be prompted to enter your name.

    Step 3: Save Your Work / Export Your Text (Writing Consultations)
    At the end of the appointment, you will want to save your work by either:
    • copying and pasting the text from the interactive whiteboard into a new Word document
    • exporting the text using the import/export button on the top right-hand corner of your screen.
    However, please be aware that none of the color coding will transfer. If you want to make sure you make all the necessary changes in your final document, we recommend you either:
    • Make all the necessary changes and revisions in the whiteboard space before you save your work.
    • Open your original Word document alongside your appointment screen and duplicate the changes.
  • Text Chat Instructions for ALC's Appointment System

    Equipment/Hardware: You do not need any special hardware for this option.
    Browsers: You will need to use either Firefox or Chrome. Internet Explorer will not work.

    If you are using this feature for the first time, please log in five minutes before your appointment so you can familiarize yourself with the program.

    Step 3: Communicating with the Staff Member
    To communicate with the staff member, you will use the chat function on the right side of the window. You can type your questions and comments in the bottom right corner of your screen.

    Whatever you type will be in one color, and whatever the consultant is typing will be in another.

    Step 4: Save Your Work / Export Your Text (Writing Consultations)
    At the end of the appointment, you will want to save your work by either:
    • copying and pasting the text from the interactive whiteboard into a new Word document

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I don’t see the subject or course I’m looking for?

    If you don’t see your course or computer application, please complete a tutor request form. This form will alert us that there is a need for your course and allow us to seek out a tutor as soon as possible.
  • What if I don’t see a time that works for me?

    If you don’t see a time that works for you, please email Achievement & Learning at alc@ubalt.edu.
  • How do I know if I’ve got an appointment or not?

    Once you’ve successfully made an appointment, you’ll receive a confirmation in your UB email. The email will also give you options to modify or cancel the appointment should you need to.
  • Where do I go for my appointment?

    Unless the tutor emails you otherwise, you’ll meet your tutor in the Langsdale Library, Achievement and Learning suite, LC420.
  • What if I need to cancel my appointment?

    You can cancel your appointment using the same Online Appointment System you used to make the appointment. Simply log in, select “My Appointments” from the main menu, and click “Cancel this Appointment.” Please make sure all cancellations are done at least four hours in advance.
  • I’m not near a computer. Can I call to make an appointment over the phone?

    Sorry, but we ask that all students make their own appointments using the online appointment system to ensure fair and timely access for all students. If you need assistance navigating the online appointment system, please stop by. We’re happy to give you a tutorial and you may also use our lobby computer station to make your appointment.
  • I can't get into the system. Can I call to make an appointment over the phone?

    Sorry, but students must use the online appointment system to make their appointments. If you do get locked out of the system, please let us know. We're happy to help you get logged back on and walk you through the process of securing an appointment.
  • Why can't I log on to the system?

    If your account has been "disabled" it's possible there's an issue with your account that we need to discuss with you. Give us a call or stop by at your earliest convenience to get your account back online.
  • How do I know if I’ve got an appointment or not?

    Once you’ve successfully made an appointment, you’ll receive a confirmation in your UB email. The email will also give you options to modify or cancel the appointment should you need to.
