GUIDE TO JAWS SCREEN READING SOFTWARE
JAWS for Windows works with the PC to provide access to software applications and the Internet. Information from the screen is read aloud.
Starting JAWS:
Since Jaws is primarily used by the visualy impaired, the Reference Librarian will direct you to the workstation with JAWS installed and start it if necessary. The desktop does have a shortcut to the program.
To Start Other Applications:
1. Use CTRL+ESC,
P, P to open Start and move to the Programs Menu.
2. Use arrows to move to the application you want to open.
3. When you have located the correct application, press ENTER to start
the application.
4. To start JAWS reading the screen for the desired application , press
the key combination INSERT+DOWN ARROW. This is the SayAll command. You
may also use this key sequence or CTRL to pause Jaws.
Commands to control reading:
INSERT+LEFT ARROW Say Prior Word
INSERT+RIGHT ARROW Say Next Word
INSERT+UP ARROW Say Line
INSERT+PAGE DOWN Say Bottom Line Of Window
INSERT+END Say Top Line Of Window
To halt speech, press the CTRL key.
If you have difficulty understanding Jaws, JAWS allows you to temporarily
change the speech rate for the current voice.
To Change Voice Rate:

Decrease Voice Rate ALT+CTRL+PAGE UP
Increase Voice Rate ALT+CTRL+PAGE DOWN
Note: JAWS states "Slower" or "faster" with each press
of the above keystrokes.
