Langsdale Library, University of Baltimore

GUIDE TO THE CIRCULATION DEPARTMENT

BORROWING REQUIREMENTS:

You must have a student ID from a University System of Maryland institution or a cooperating institution (see list of institutions below), which has been validated for the current semester. UB students who do not have a UB library barcode may obtain one at the Circulation desk with a valid UB ID or a picture ID and proof of enrollment at UB.

BORROWING LIMITS:

Books: Reference books and Special Collection materials do not circulate except through special approval of those departments. In such cases they are charged and returned through those departments.
Periodicals: Periodicals do not circulate.
Government Documents: Many items do circulate. Previously uncirculated documents must be approved for circulation by the Reference Librarian . You must then check them out at the Circulation Desk.
Reserves: Up to three reserve items may be checked out that the same time.
RESERVES:

Most reserve materials are for in-library use only with a two-hour limit; you may renew them if they are not requested by another patron. The course instructor determines outside-library use. Some courses have online reserves that require a password. If your instructor has any web-based reserves, he/she will give you the password. If you don't have a password for reserves, you must request it from your INSTRUCTOR. With a password you will be able to access these online reserves at any time on or off campus.

BORROWING PERIODS:

The initial borrowing period is four weeks; you may renew materials if no hold has been placed on the item(s) by another patron. This includes books, audiocassettes, computer diskettes, CD-ROMs and government documents. Normally only one renewal is granted.

The video borrowing period is 7 days for UB patrons ONLY.

OVERDUES & FINES:

Circulating Material: After a three-day grace period, fines on overdue books, videos and government documents accrue at a rate of 25 cents per day from the original due date. The maximum fine is $20.00
Lost items: The fee for lost books, videos or audiocassettes is $125.00. The fee for lost government documents is $25.00.
Reserves: There is a $5.00 fine for unauthorized removal of in-library reserves from the library. The fine for late out-of-library reserves is $1.00 per day.
You must pay all fines and fees in the Business Office. Langsdale does not collect any money for fines or fees.

BOOK RETURN:

The library has a book deposit at its Maryland Avenue entrance, which allows patrons to return books even the library is closed. You may also return overdue books in the bookdrop.

All books found in the book deposit when the library reopens are considered returned on the last day the library was open. Patrons who return books at the Circulation desk may request a return receipt. UB books may also be returned to any USM Library (see list below).
