An annual compilation of data in a variety of basic categories (i.e., population, health, crime, employment, education), this source can serve as the starting point for many statistical searches.

Demographic yearbook/Annuaire demographique. (1970 - 2000). New York: United Nations Statistical Office. (XHA 17 .D4 ).

Another publication of the United Nations, this yearbook focuses on data concerning vital statistics. In addition to the general data published annually, each volume treats a particular topic in depth.

Europa world yearbook (1983 to present). London: Europa Publications. (XJN 1.E89)

This is a recommended source for background information on all countries of the world. Each entry includes a statistical survey with data on major topics, as well as some less commonly covered areas such as communication and transportation.

International financial statistics.(1985 to present). Washington: International Monetary Fund. (XHF 1016 .I53 [year])

The monthly volumes present data on the financial status of countries, which includes currency exchange rates, banking information, interest rates, and international transactions, based on credit and loan information for members of the International Monetary Fund. The Yearbook cumulates this data and provides a 30-year time series.

International trade statistics yearbook (1980 to present). New York: United Nations Statistical Office. (XHF 91 .U57[year])

The tables in Volume I give the amount and value of commercial products by country, while Volume II has the reverse arrangement of country imports and exports by type of product. It also provides special tables with regional trends and value of trade between regions.

This publication of the United Nations gives a topical breakdown of statistical series by country.
