Every semester, Langsdale Library offers an exciting array of workshops covering a variety of research topics.

Please register for workshops by contacting the Reference staff at (410) 837-4274 or at langref@ubalt.edu or by visiting the Reference desk on the first floor of the Library. All workshops are free and take place in Langsdale Library room 401, unless otherwise noted .

Beyond Google: 10 Sources You Can’t Do Without

There is so much information available on the web – not all of which is accessible through Google.  Come to this workshop to learn about other resources available on the web (some free, some that the university buys for you) to help jump start your research.  We’ll talk about everything from Scholarpedia to JSTOR and lots in-between.

Educational Technology: Tools for Research and Writing

Langsdale Library and the Academic Resource Center will introduce you to tools that will help you collect, organize and cite research, and to organize their writing. The following programs will be demonstrated:

Zotero (free, web-based)
Manage citations much like RefWorks or EndNote.
Organize, store and annotate sources from the web, databases or books.
Format and export citations in any style into a Word document.

Del.icio.us (free, web-based)
Store bookmarks online so they’re accessible on every computer.
Search others’ bookmarks for useful websites.

EBSCOHost Alert Service (free)
Receive automatic updates from your favorite journal or for a specific search term.
Updates can be emailed or sent via RSS feed.

Inspiration (available in UB labs; free take-home for faculty/staff)
Create concept maps (graphic organizers).
Transfer from diagram to outline form.
Export to word processor.

Want to create your own web page or put your resume on the web? Learn the basics of HTML (hypertext markup language), the programming language used to create web sites. This is an excellent course to attend prior to learning Dreamweaver or other web editors.

HTML With Style: Using CSS

Learn how to enhance the design of your web pages using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). CSS makes it easier to manage the look and feel of your web pages, and makes your website viewable in multiple browsers. Want to find out what else CSS can do? Come and join us.

Is Langsdale Library new to you? Take a library tour! Library tours show you the many types of information and services Langsdale Library has to offer, and will help you become familiar with the different parts of the library.

Tours will begin at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the library and last 45-60 minutes. These are walk-in tours; no registration is necessary.

Patent Searching for Business Intelligence

Langsdale Library and the UB Law Library will show you how to search patents to discover what innovations are happening in your field or to see what your competition is up to. You will also see how searching trademarks and domain name registrations can help track potential competitors.
