Book Sale Nov 2-3

Langsdale's annual book sale will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 2-3, 2005, in the gallery behind the auditorium.

Update:
Thanks to everyone who came and bought books, the book sale was a rousing success. All the proceeds from sale go to the UB Educational Foundation. And if you need to make room for all those new books, you can bring your old books to Langsdale for next year's book sale.

Book scanning projects

There has been a lot of news about Google Print lately. A number of authors and some publishers have sued to stop Google from scanning copyrighted works they get from libraries. Meanwhile, Yahoo!, the University of California and others have started the Open Content Alliance which is only scanning in books in the public domain.

New Copiers

If you have tried to make copies at Langsdale recently, you may have experienced a certain amount of frustration. At one point recently, all 3 of our copy machines were not working and some people had to take items out of the building in order to make copies.

We are happy to report that we now have brand new copiers in Langsdale. So as the weather turns colder, we won't be making you run outside just to make copies.

Interesting Resource

I've been going through CHOICE's best websites for 2005, and I found a free database from ISI called ISIHighlycited.com . You may search by individual author or browse a subject area (e.g., psychology/psychiatry) for the top researchers cited in the field.

I know that Applied Behavioral Sciences is very interested in ISI rankings, so I sent them the link. You may want to send it to other faculty who may be interested.

[ub] Tribute to Dr. Thomas Jacklin

Langsdale Library is honored to be hosting a Memorial Display for Dr. Thomas Jacklin. The display, located on the first floor of Langsdale Library, highlights his life and work here at UB. Dr. Jacklin passed away April 28, 2005 after losing his battle with lung cancer.

He came to UB in 1980 and won the hearts of his students and colleagues. He served on numerous committees, won several teaching awards including a lifetime achievement award, and was Faculty Advisor for Phi Alpha Theta honor society. He worked on projects such as Baltimore Neighborhood Heritage Project, Lessons from the Light Rail, and Saving the Community: Leakin Park and the Pursuit of the Light Rail. He loved UB.

Dr. J as his students so fondly called him also loved trains. He was a docent for The B&O Railroad Museum and wrote extensively on the subject of the railroads. He published many articles in railroad magazines and presented papers for organizations such as: National Railroad Heritage Preservation at Penn State, Preservation and Education Association of Railway Museums, and the Eastern Conference Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. He was Editorial Advisor for Railroad History in 2004.
