FirstGov.gov is now USA.gov

The public spoke, and the General Services Administration (GSA) listened.

GSA is responsible for operating and maintaining the U.S. government's official web portal, formerly know as FirstGov.gov. This month, the site changed its name to USA.gov, which should be a lot easier for everyone to remember.

Why the change? Here are a few things GSA learned from visitors to the site:
  • Last year, more than 600,000 people typed "usa.gov" into their web browser when searching for government information.
  • In a 2006 telephone survey, 79 percent of respondents preferred the name USA.gov.
  • USA.gov is intuitive—it describes what our site is: the U.S. government online.
For more information about the name change, you can read the announcement and FAQ.

Hurricane Katrina Report Now Available

Last fall, the House of Representatives formed a bipartisan committee to investigate federal, state and local response to Hurricane Katrina. The committee has finished its work, and yesterday (2/15) they released their report, entitled A Failure of Initiative: The Final Report of the Select Bipartisan Committee to Investigate the Preparation for and Response to Hurricane Katrina (PDF).

From the report's preface:
Our investigation revealed that Katrina was a national failure, an abdication of the most solemn obligation to provide for the common welfare. At every level - individual, corporate, philanthropic, and governmental - we failed to meet the challenge that was Katrina. In this cautionary tale, all the little pigs built houses of straw.
The Appendices listed in the table of contents are in a separate PDF file: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/katrinareport/appendices.pdf

House Rules and Manual for 109th Congress Now Available

The House Rules and Manual for the 109th Congress is now available from the Government Printing Office on GPO Access:

http://www.gpoaccess.gov/hrm/browse_109.html

From the press release:

"The House Rules and Manual is published by the the House Parliamentarian's Office. This document is formally entitled Constitution, Jefferson's Manual, and Rules of the House of Representatives and contains the fundamental source material for parliamentary procedure used in the House of Representatives, including:
  • the Constitution of the United States;
  • applicable provisions of Jefferson's Manual;
  • rules of the House;
  • provisions of law and resolutions having the force of rules of the House; and
  • pertinent decisions of the Speakers and other presiding officers of the House and Committee of the Whole interpreting the rules and other procedural authority used in the House of Representatives."
The complete document is very large (1400+ pages), so the GPO made each chapter a separate file, viewable in HTML or PDF.

Previous editions (back the 105th Congress) are also available on the site.
