Langsdale's Director to Retire

The most recent UB Post has an article on Langsdale's Director, Steve LaBash, who will retire this June. In it, you can read about Steve's career and get several observations both by and about him. You can also also read Steve's farewell message to the campus in the latest issue of the Langsdale Link.

Take me out to the Library

For those of you who miss being at Camden Yards on opening day, we recommend getting your baseball fix at the library.

To get you in the mood, here are several books available in Langsdale you may want to peruse:

If you don't feel like coming to Langsdale, you can also access several baseball related journals and magazines through ResearchPort. Here are a few:

Finally, while I am sure a baseball fan will know about ESPN, MLB.com and the like, here are a few websites with information about the history of baseball that you may want to check out.

  • The Library of Congress' Historic Baseball Resources

  • Sports Illustrated Vault - Sports Illustrated has put 54 years worth of its articles online. Included in the archive is a copy of every cover, and links to related videos and photographs, although the photographs from the artices themselves are largely absent. However, they make it pretty easy to do things like search for covers featuring the Baltimore Orioles.

Do you have a favorite baseball related book, journal or website not listed here? Let us know in the comments.

Langsdale Library now offers online access to Choice.

Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries provides reviews of materials of interest to those in higher education. Each year they publish over 7,000 reviews of books, electronic resources and Internet sites. These reviews are one tool used by many librarians across the country, including those at Langsdale, to aid in discovering new resources and deciding which ones to purchase.

Now, students and faculty can view the Choice reviews online. Whether it helps determine which book to purchase for oneself, or to recommend that Langsdale purchase a book for the library, Choice can be a valuable tool.

Currently this is available on campus only at http://www.cro2.org
Contact Susan Wheeler at x4299 or swheeler@ubalt.edu for more information.

While classes are out, Langsdale shifts

Classes may not be in session in January, but that does not mean all is quiet within the walls of Langsdale Library. During the break, the 4th floor is being renovated so that our Special Collections department can use most of the floor for its collections.

And while you may not be able to enjoy the 4th floor while the walls are being moved around, you can come into our 2nd floor and enjoy the comfy chairs (equipped with a swing table for your books or a laptop) that arrived last semester.

(some) Videos Available Online from Langsdale

The Library is excited to present 2 new, innovative services to the UB community.

Streaming Videos
As part of a pilot project we are providing streaming video access to a selection of 50 academic-oriented documentary and educational films. These streaming videos can be used in your classroom or you can have your students view the videos from any PC on or off campus.
We invite you to visit our FAQ.

Watching DVDs on Reserve Over the Internet
Another project we are piloting allows students to watch DVDs that have been placed on Reserve for a class from the comfort of their own home. We have purchased something called a SlingBox which provides the ability for someone to watch a DVD (located in a DVD player in Langsdale) over the Internet. There are some limitations: the Slingbox is not a streaming service and will not allow multiple people to view it at the same time like the educational films mentioned above. However, it will allow people to watch a DVD without having to come into Langsdale, and we can even arrange viewings when Langsdale is closed.

Langsdale's Special Collection in the News

Langsdale Library's Special Collections department's WMAR collection was featured in a recent Baltimore Examiner article. The collection consists mostly of reels of 16mm film shot by WMAR for use in their nightly news broadcasts and goes back yo 1948.

Because the film is old and has been spliced together, viewing the film through a projector is essentially impossible. So Langsdale Library and the University of Baltimore is pursuing funding to have a potion of the film digitized and made available for people to view. The amount of film is so extensive, that even with a grant we would only be able to digitize a small portion of our collection.

A catalog upgrade

On Sunday July 15, the University System of Maryland (USM) upgraded the software that runs the catalog for all USM libraries, including that of Langsdale.

The differences in the new version are fairly minor. So minor, that you probably did not even know there was a catalog upgrade unless you tried searching it while it was down overnight for the upgrade. The main improvement is a new login screen that looks the same as that of ResearchPort. The new login can save you a step if you want to log into the catalog from ResearchPort or vice versa. The integration of the logins is not quite seamless, but you should not have to type in your library account number more than once.

The new catalog has the potential to generate a list of new books that match the result of a search, but that piece of the catalog has not yet been implemented. We hope to be able to use this feature to generate new books lists by topic in the future. Still, you may notice at the top of the catalog screen a search option that says "new books". This will allow you to search through just our newest items.

Article on UB's look at the Baltimore Riots

The April 4 edition of the Baltimore Sun has an article by Gadi Dechter entitled "Baltimore's Riots Remembered" that details UB's examination of events in Baltimore following the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. You can read about some of the work done by Langsdale's special collections department, along with several UB faculty members and students, to create a Baltimore 168 Riots and Rebirth Collection.

The article from the Baltimore Sun will only be available online for 2 weeks, but members of the UB community can continue to access the article through Langsdale's subscription to the Baltimore Sun archives going back to 1990.

Visit Langsdale during Spring Break

Langsdale may not be the name of a beach in Florida. Nor does MTV appear to have plans to film in the library. However, if you want a place to catch up on your class work, find some interesting reading material or do library research, Langsdale will be open regular hours during spring break, including Saturday and Sunday.

E-Reserves Still Available

As you may know, UB's online courseware system, WebTycho has been having some problems recently. Some students have asked whether or not they could still get to their course reserve pages, since they may typically access their reserves through a link in Web Tycho.

It turns out that you can. If a professor has put items on reserves through Langsdale's E-RES system, you can access them anytime by using one of the "Course Reserves" links on Langsdale's website. Or you can bookmark the following link: http://webreserves.ubalt.edu/eres/courseindex.aspx?page=search

Progress Continues

Welcome to Langsdale! Here is what you would have seen if you had entered the library this afternoon
Under construction

Yes, we still have some construction to do, but if you turned your head to the left, you may have noticed a brand new reference desk, complete with a reference librarian...
The New Reference Desk!

...and some chairs waiting around for new furniture.

Meanwhile, we are trying to set up the 2nd floor for group study along with some (relatively) comfortable seating.

Open Again

On Jan 11, Langsdale Library will reopen to the public. The renovation is not quite complete as some additional work needs to be done on the 1st floor. In fact, the furniture for the 1st floor won't arrive until Friday, so it looks quite empty at the moment.

However, access to the stacks has been restored, so you can come to check out books and videos. In addition, the computer lab on the 2nd floor has been almost completely restored, and is available if you need a computer on campus.

So please come and check out our new paint job and carpet, but be sure to come back in the next few weeks to see what the final result looks like.

A new look for Langsdale online

As you can tell, Langsdale has changed the look of its website, adopting the look and colors of the new UB site. We have changed some of our site's navigational structure based on several usability studies, but there is always room for improvement.

New to the page are several "Quick Search" options on the right that will allow you to see whether Langsdale has a particular book or journal and do some other types of searching.

If you have any suggestions or comments on the new design, please let us know.

The Langsdale Library building is undergoing a renovation as well. As you enter the building, you may notice that some things have been shifted around in anticipation of the forthcoming improvements.
