The Bell is Back!

Ship's Bell of U.S. Cruisers Maryland and Baltimore Returned to Library - Along with Scholarship

Over four years ago it was announced that "The great bronze bell that has stood at the center of the John and Frances Angelos Law Center lobby for the last 20 years was transferred to Langsdale Library's main floor." [Langsdale Link S 2005]

Two years later, however, the library was renovated and the ship's bell, which had traveled the world in the naval service, was on the move again, though just across campus to a temporary location in Academic Center. It is now back in the library, the centerpiece of the U.S. Documents Reading Room on the second floor. Like the documents kept there, the bell is federal property, on deposit here. The U.S. Navy Historical Center first placed the bell, which had served the cruisers Maryland and Baltimore, at the university in 1981.

On the Saturday before Veterans Day, the bell was unveiled in its new location. The USS Baltimore Association raised money not only for a new stand and plaque, but also for a USS Baltimore Scholarship to be awarded for the first time in 2010. Leading these efforts and speaking at the ceremony were Roy R. Grundy, retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve; David Blomstrom, the last President of the USS Baltimore (CA-68) Association; and Capt. Christos Zirps, USN (Ret.) who oversaw installation of the bell and moderated the ceremony. All three men served aboard the Baltimore in the 1950's. They credited Capt. John M. Backer, USNR (Ret.) of Baltimore for bringing the bell to the attention of the Association at what they had presumed to be their last reunion in Memphis, TN.

Displayed on the wall behind are items from the UB Print Collection associated with the naval service in the early twentieth century. A set of 24 naval prints depicts vessels of the "Great White Fleet", sister ships of the cruiser Maryland. On the far left is one of a series of World War I recruiting posters in this collection.

Langsdale Basement to be closed, Microfilm inaccessible

The basement in Langsdale Library will be closed for asbestos abatement from Monday Nov. 16 – Wednesday Nov. 18. The basement will be inaccessible during that time. Fortunately, there is not much down there at the moment so most people won't even notice the the closure. Well at least not until they have to use the facilities (tip: there are bathrooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors). The other main impact of the closure is that our microfiche and microfilm will be inaccessible for a few days.

Thank you for your patience.

E-Book of the Month

NetLibrary eBook of the Month

Flatlined lifts the veil of secrecy on twenty-first century health care and delves into the realities of good people caught in a bad medical system. Dr. Guy L. Clifton, a practitioner as well as a policy advocate, reveals first-hand accounts of needless tragedy, such as the young man who died after a car wreck for lack of a bed in a qualified hospital and the surgeon who was dejected by the scarcity of resources needed to enable him to perform heart surgery on an uninsured man.

Arguing that a lack of coordinated care and quality medical practice benchmarks result in high levels of redundancy and ineffectiveness, Clifton proposes that the key to reducing health care costs, improving quality, and financially protecting the uninsured, is to reduce wastefulness, and offers a solution for achieving success.

Provided through the generous support of Rutgers University Press, Flatlined will be available free to Langsdale Library patrons September 1-30. To access this title from the Langsdale Library homepage, click on NetLibrary (E-Books) and follow the links. Once in NetLibrary, click on the e-book of the month on the right side of the page. Twittering at the Library

The staff at Langsdale are always thinking of ways we can use Web 2.0 technolgies to connect with students and faculty at UB. For example, you can send us a reference question through AIM (ublangsdale) or become a fan of Langsdale on Facebook.

Now you can also follow us on Twitter!.

To start with, we are tweeting about questions people ask us. When we started experimenting with this, one thing we discovered was that we wound up highlighting several resources and services in Langsdale that at least some people didn't know about. So if you think it might be interesting to see what questions people ask librarians, if you want to keep abreast of what services are available to you through your library, or if you want to experiment with Twitter stuff yourself, don't forget to follow langsdale on Twitter.

Good Intentions (or how I broke the new catalog for a day)

I had this great idea. Well, I still think it is a great idea and I hope most UB students and faculty will think so as well. The University System of Maryland Libraries just purchased a shiny new interface for our online catalog called WorldCat Local (WCL). The old catalog is still there, but WCL local has several features and a much better display that makes it much easier to use and we are planning to have most of the links to the Langsdale Catalog point to WCL by the time the Fall semester starts. All well and good so far.

My great idea, and the problem, comes from this thing called the "WCL configuration module." It turns out that each library has the ability to go into its configuration module and change settings. Some of these are pretty basic, like we want to use a UB logo and have a link back to Langsdale's home page. One option in particular got me thinking. We have the option of changing of what constitutes the "local". Right now "local" means Langsdale Library, so items owned by Langsdale Library will display first and you can tell whether an item is on the shelf or checked out. However we can change the definition of "local" to include both Langsdale and the Law Library. There are plenty of topics I can think of (civil rights, criminal justice, etc.) where students would be able to find materials in both libraries on campus, but right now there is no easy way to search just the two UB libraries. I think WCL will be more useful to everyone on campus if they can find items on their topic in either library. So I went ahead and changed the setting in WCL so that items in either Langsdale or the Law Library, along with call numbers and checked out statuses, would display first.

This completely hosed our copy of WCL. Instead of displaying UB stuff first, it was no longer able to tell whether Langsdale had an item or not, much less the Law Library. Apparently there was a notice posted a few weeks ago saying "if changes are made to the Level 2 or Level 3
Relevancy configurations it could cause your WorldCat Local to break." It is still not clear to me exactly what they mean by Level 2 or Level 3 Relevancy, but I am pretty sure I found one example.

So my great idea for WCL is on hold at the moment. Our version has been restored, so it shows Langsdale's holdings again (although the search USM option doesn't work). There is supposed to be a patch installed in July to allow these changes to work, and I shall try again.

A New Look for the Catalog

Langsdale Library has a brand new interface for its online catalog called WordCat Local (http://langsdale.ubalt.edu/ubworldcat.html). WorldCat Local has more content than our current catalog - it includes books owned by other libraries as well as a limited number of articles - and several features that we think make it easier to use. Some of the features include an easier to read display, a less confusing way to find a book's call number, and suggestions of ways you can refine a search. In addition, there are opportunities for you to add tags and share your own reviews of books if you create a free WorldCat account.

We are planning to direct most of the links on our website that point people to the 'Library Catalog" to the new WorldCat local page. Before we do this, we would love to get your feedback on WorldCat Local and whether you think it is an improvement or not.

You can leave your input by commenting on this blog entry, or by sending a comment to mshochet@ubalt.edu.

SPSS has a stronger correlation to Langsdale

Several students have asked if they could use SPSS on the public computers in Langsdales. Until now, we only had it available on a 4 of the computers here.

Thanks to the work of OTS staff, SPSS is now available on all of the computers in Langsdale. So now you can do your statistics assignment in the library too.

Come in through the front door

Langsdale's front doors have been replaced and you can now proudly walk in through the front door! We apologize to those of you who do not want to be caught studying or doing research, but you won't be able to slink through the side door anymore.

New "storefront"

Of course, once you get in the building, you will have to use the stairs to get to other floors, but the elevator should be back in working order soon.

You don't need a hard hat to visit, but it sure seems that way

Langsdale is open during construction!

It is true that the entrance way of Langsdale is undergoing a renovation, and that you need to enter along the side.
Open, but under contruction

It is also true that the first floor is a tad hard to navigate, and can get a bit noisy.
New "storefront"?

But the rest of the library is still open, relatively quiet and free of construction materials lying on the floor. Plus we will still answer your reference questions on the phone, even if it does feel like we are in the middle of a construction zone.

To make things more interesting desks and other furniture are being moved into the new staff area on the 2nd floor.
staff area

Most of the loudest work will be done when the library is closed, and all work is expected to be completed before too long. So don't be afraid to stop in and check out a book or video, even if we are under construction.

In transition

Last week, Langsdale Library bid farewell to Director Steve LaBash.
Director's Retirement Party

Steve wasted no time enjoying his retirement, and is already vacationing.
Director's Retirement Party

Next week, former assistant library director Lucy Holman-Rector will start her latest role at UB: Director of Langsdale Library
Lucy's farewell party

For the next week, Langsdale has no director and the staff is running wild. In my case, this means I get to post pictures of Steve and Lucy on the Internet. (Really, how wild do you think librarians get at work? We have a stereotype to maintain).

Take me out to the Library

For those of you who miss being at Camden Yards on opening day, we recommend getting your baseball fix at the library.

To get you in the mood, here are several books available in Langsdale you may want to peruse:

If you don't feel like coming to Langsdale, you can also access several baseball related journals and magazines through ResearchPort. Here are a few:

Finally, while I am sure a baseball fan will know about ESPN, MLB.com and the like, here are a few websites with information about the history of baseball that you may want to check out.

  • The Library of Congress' Historic Baseball Resources

  • Sports Illustrated Vault - Sports Illustrated has put 54 years worth of its articles online. Included in the archive is a copy of every cover, and links to related videos and photographs, although the photographs from the artices themselves are largely absent. However, they make it pretty easy to do things like search for covers featuring the Baltimore Orioles.

Do you have a favorite baseball related book, journal or website not listed here? Let us know in the comments.

Langsdale Library now offers online access to Choice.

Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries provides reviews of materials of interest to those in higher education. Each year they publish over 7,000 reviews of books, electronic resources and Internet sites. These reviews are one tool used by many librarians across the country, including those at Langsdale, to aid in discovering new resources and deciding which ones to purchase.

Now, students and faculty can view the Choice reviews online. Whether it helps determine which book to purchase for oneself, or to recommend that Langsdale purchase a book for the library, Choice can be a valuable tool.

Currently this is available on campus only at http://www.cro2.org
Contact Susan Wheeler at x4299 or swheeler@ubalt.edu for more information.

While classes are out, Langsdale shifts

Classes may not be in session in January, but that does not mean all is quiet within the walls of Langsdale Library. During the break, the 4th floor is being renovated so that our Special Collections department can use most of the floor for its collections.

And while you may not be able to enjoy the 4th floor while the walls are being moved around, you can come into our 2nd floor and enjoy the comfy chairs (equipped with a swing table for your books or a laptop) that arrived last semester.

(some) Videos Available Online from Langsdale

The Library is excited to present 2 new, innovative services to the UB community.

Streaming Videos
As part of a pilot project we are providing streaming video access to a selection of 50 academic-oriented documentary and educational films. These streaming videos can be used in your classroom or you can have your students view the videos from any PC on or off campus.
We invite you to visit our FAQ.

Watching DVDs on Reserve Over the Internet
Another project we are piloting allows students to watch DVDs that have been placed on Reserve for a class from the comfort of their own home. We have purchased something called a SlingBox which provides the ability for someone to watch a DVD (located in a DVD player in Langsdale) over the Internet. There are some limitations: the Slingbox is not a streaming service and will not allow multiple people to view it at the same time like the educational films mentioned above. However, it will allow people to watch a DVD without having to come into Langsdale, and we can even arrange viewings when Langsdale is closed.

Langsdale's Special Collection in the News

Langsdale Library's Special Collections department's WMAR collection was featured in a recent Baltimore Examiner article. The collection consists mostly of reels of 16mm film shot by WMAR for use in their nightly news broadcasts and goes back yo 1948.

Because the film is old and has been spliced together, viewing the film through a projector is essentially impossible. So Langsdale Library and the University of Baltimore is pursuing funding to have a potion of the film digitized and made available for people to view. The amount of film is so extensive, that even with a grant we would only be able to digitize a small portion of our collection.

A catalog upgrade

On Sunday July 15, the University System of Maryland (USM) upgraded the software that runs the catalog for all USM libraries, including that of Langsdale.

The differences in the new version are fairly minor. So minor, that you probably did not even know there was a catalog upgrade unless you tried searching it while it was down overnight for the upgrade. The main improvement is a new login screen that looks the same as that of ResearchPort. The new login can save you a step if you want to log into the catalog from ResearchPort or vice versa. The integration of the logins is not quite seamless, but you should not have to type in your library account number more than once.

The new catalog has the potential to generate a list of new books that match the result of a search, but that piece of the catalog has not yet been implemented. We hope to be able to use this feature to generate new books lists by topic in the future. Still, you may notice at the top of the catalog screen a search option that says "new books". This will allow you to search through just our newest items.

Article on UB's look at the Baltimore Riots

The April 4 edition of the Baltimore Sun has an article by Gadi Dechter entitled "Baltimore's Riots Remembered" that details UB's examination of events in Baltimore following the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. You can read about some of the work done by Langsdale's special collections department, along with several UB faculty members and students, to create a Baltimore 168 Riots and Rebirth Collection.

The article from the Baltimore Sun will only be available online for 2 weeks, but members of the UB community can continue to access the article through Langsdale's subscription to the Baltimore Sun archives going back to 1990.

Open Again

On Jan 11, Langsdale Library will reopen to the public. The renovation is not quite complete as some additional work needs to be done on the 1st floor. In fact, the furniture for the 1st floor won't arrive until Friday, so it looks quite empty at the moment.

However, access to the stacks has been restored, so you can come to check out books and videos. In addition, the computer lab on the 2nd floor has been almost completely restored, and is available if you need a computer on campus.

So please come and check out our new paint job and carpet, but be sure to come back in the next few weeks to see what the final result looks like.

A new look for Langsdale online

As you can tell, Langsdale has changed the look of its website, adopting the look and colors of the new UB site. We have changed some of our site's navigational structure based on several usability studies, but there is always room for improvement.

New to the page are several "Quick Search" options on the right that will allow you to see whether Langsdale has a particular book or journal and do some other types of searching.

If you have any suggestions or comments on the new design, please let us know.

The Langsdale Library building is undergoing a renovation as well. As you enter the building, you may notice that some things have been shifted around in anticipation of the forthcoming improvements.
