And a New Look for the Building, Too

As you enter Langsdale’s first floor, you will notice something is missing.  Even newcomers to the library can’t help but notice the empty spaces on the first floor that used to be home to current periodicals and one rather large bell.  We had hoped to renovate the first and second floors of the library over the summer break, but due to unforeseen delays, we had to reschedule the bulk of the renovation for early January 2007.

When it is completed, the first floor will have a completely new look–including new carpet and paint.  A large bank of computers on the  first floor along Maryland Avenue will not only increase the number of computers available to students on campus, but will provide work areas near windows that are a bit more open for those who may prefer such an environment.  The reference desk and the reference collection will also move downstairs, and we will also add some viewing stations for VHS tapes and DVDs.

In anticipation of the renovation, we have moved current periodicals that formerly resided on the first floor into the stacks where they can be found, by call number, with their older brethren.   Once the renovation is completed, all periodicals will be moved to the second floor and filed alphabetically for easier browsing.

The one part of the renovation that we hope to complete in early September is the addition of a new teaching lab on the fourth floor.  The lab on the second floor will remain,  and we will soon have two classrooms in which to teach library instruction sessions.  This additional space comes none too soon, as Langsdale’s instruction sessions are becoming more and more popular. Plus, we anticipate an even greater demand when the freshmen arrive next year.

Keep track of new renovation developments at the Langsdale Renovation blog.
