Did you notice the upgrade?
by Ted Kruse
On Jan. 3rd, Aleph - the software used to maintain Langsdale Library's
online catalog - was upgraded to version 16. However, most UB students,
faculty and staff probably did not notice. While the version changed many
staff functions, the public interface changed very little.
As with all software changes, there were a few glitches. If you try to
use the catalog to request an item from another campus, you may see an
inaccurate list of “excluded pickup/delivery locations.” Langsdale
will still obtain books from the "excluded" campuses.
The new version for staff functions, especially in acquisitions, serials
and cataloging, represented major changes. Some of the changes improved
operations and others provided just a different way of doing the same
function. Now, after the new version's first month in use, workflow is
returning to normal.
Exlibris, the developer of Aleph, has committed to annual software revisions;
so look for another version in 2006.
