Langsdale's Annual Book Sale: Where do all those books come from?

This year’s book sale will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 2-3, 2005, in the gallery behind the auditorium. As patrons of previous Langsdale book sales will attest, there is a wealth of material for sale. Where does all of this stuff come from? There are several paths to the library which can end either with the addition of items to our collections or with additional items for the book sale tables.

The UB community is itself a source of donations. Alumni, students, staff and faculty faithfully contribute material to the library. Those who review books are often able to contribute their review copies to the library.

We are fortunate to be situated in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, which enables us to take advantage of free federal offerings. The Library of Congress Surplus Book Program provides surplus books to educational institutions that are able to send a representative to Capitol Hill to make selections and remove the materials. Most of these books have been turned over to the Library of Congress by other federal agencies. Departing or defeated members of Congress who are emptying the bookshelves of their offices often offer their materials as well.

Those individuals who are heading into retirement often make generous donations to the library as well. Those retiring from high-profile positions may have entire book cases that need to be emptied, and several area retirement communities provide a continuing stream of donations from new residents who find themselves with limited space for home libraries.

Whatever the path, donations are very welcome. Gifts are a major source of new material for Langsdale Library.
