From the Director's DeskWelcome to the spring semester and the spring 2007 issue of the Langsdale Link, Langsdale Library’s electronic newsletter. Much of this issue focuses on the major renovation of the library, and we have information on our forthcoming Renovation Week of events, which includes daily drawings for gift certificates, a reception, and an official welcome from top administrators. A brief article about the history of Langsdale Library helps put our recent renovation into context. Also in this issue is an article on Thomas J. D’Alesandro, Jr., former state legislature delegate and congressman from Maryland as well as three-time mayor of Baltimore. D’Alesandro’s daughter, Nancy Pelosi, is the new speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. The information and photos in this article come from the materials in our Special Collections department. It’s an excellent example of our commitment to documenting Baltimore’s history. Another article discusses two services that we provide: intercampus loans and interlibrary loans. The services complement each other and allow us to provide you with materials from other libraries in the University System of Maryland as well as from (almost) anywhere in the world. Since Valentine’s Day is coming up (February 14 also happens to be the date of our big renovation reception), we’ve suggested some videos from our collection that you might want to share with your valentine. In our Staff Notes section you'll meet Lauren Sellmayer, our newest staff member and one of the many people at the library dedicated to providing you with the services and information you need for educational, personal, and other purposes. As always, we welcome comments on this issue and suggestions or questions that might lead to future articles. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at slabash@ubalt.edu or 410.837.4269. Steve LaBash |
