Mary Eliza Watters Risteau was born on April 24, 1890 and died July 24, 1978. A 1938 graduate of the University of Baltimore's School of Law, she was the first female member of the Maryland House of Delegates, the first female state senator in Maryland, and the first woman on the Maryland State Board of Education. Risteau was instrumental in the struggle to establish the principle of providing equal opportunity in education throughout the state.
The collection was originally donated to the Maryland Historical Society by the Estate of Mary E.W. Risteau through Mrs. Fred L. Bull on May 26, 1979. A letter by Thomas G. Pullen, Jr. to the director of Society dated August 22, 1978 established the request of the University of Baltimore for pertinent Risteau papers, which were transferred at an unknown later date.
