GUIDE TO FINDING PERIODICALS

All periodicals in Langsdale Library are shelved by call number; they are not arranged alphabetically.

To find the call number for the periodical/magazine/newspaper/journal that you need: Use the online Library Catalog

"LIBRARY HAS: Vol. n, [date]- " means that we own paper copies of the title from the starting date to the date after the hyphen. If there is no volume and date to the right of the hyphen, we own from the starting date through to the current issue. Microfilm is listed separately.

a. The Current Issue screen lists issues, beginning with the most recent. Look in the column labeled "Status." It will say "In" if the item is to be found on the first floor (by call number, of course!) When the status changes to "Bound", those issues are found on the upper floors according to this division:
A to G call numbers - 4th floor
H to Z call numbers - 3rd floor
If status reads at " At Bindery" ask a librarian for assistance.

b. Microfilm is in the basement by call number. There are a few titles for which Langsdale gets only microfilm; for newspapers and some magazines we discard the paper copies when the microfilm arrives. On the individual issue screen, when all the individual issues displayed show "In," the issues preceding the last issue listed are on microfilm.

c. For government document periodicals ("DOCS") look on the second floor (east side) regardless of the date of the issue.

Go to the floor where the material you want is shelved. On the third and fourth floors periodical series are interfiled with circulating books. (Periodicals, however, do not circulate.) Find the periodical on the shelf, or in the basement file drawers in the case of microfilm; choose the volume which matches the date given in the citation.

Photocopy articles if desired, using coins or a debit card. (Microfilm/fiche printers require a card which can be purchased on the first floor.)
