What we have done recently

Carol Vaeth attended ILLiad Conference at Virginia Beach, VA on March 15-16, 2007. She was a presenter, along with Tanner Wray (College Park) Jamie Bush (USMAI) and Robin Maskal (UMBC), at a session entitled “Making Consortial Resource Sharing a Reality: ILLiad and Resource Sharing in the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions Consortium of Libraries.”

Steve Labash, Lucy Holman, Jeffrey Hutson, Thomas Arendall-Salvetti, Michael Shochet and Susan Wheeler attended to Association of College and Research Libraries Annual Conference in Baltimore, on March 30- April1 2007. There were numerous sessions on issues facing academic libraries with an emphasis on information literacy and delivering services online.

Steve Labash, Michael Shochet, and Susan Wheeler attended to the “Library Transformation: Making it Happen” on March 23, 2007. The teleconference was aired at UB.

Steve Labash and Susan Wheeler attended to the Council of Library Directors meeting on March 15, 2007. Topics discussed included in-depth testing of PDQ which is the alternative version of PPH (patron placed holds), a method of “hiding” SSNs, new books listings, standardizing USMAI statistical definitions and collection methods for regular reports.

Thomas Arendall-Salvetti, Reference/Instruction Librarian, and Lucy Holoman-Rector, Associate Director, attended the General Education and Assessment conference that took place in Miami, March 1-3, 2007. The Conference focused on two main themes, general education (the core courses that 1st and 2nd year students take before entering a major) and assessment (methods for systematically tracking student learning instead of faculty inputs). 

Ted Kruse, Tami Smith and Susan Wheeler had the opportunity to attend the first in a series of lectures sponsored by the UMCP University Libraries, Technical Services Division, on February 20, 2007. They attended sessions on "The Impending Demise of the Local OPAC" and "Putting Library Services Where Our Users Live and Work".

Ivy Owens attended the Maryland State Documents Depository Libraries Meeting held at Enoch Pratt Free Library on November 29, 2006. The meeting addressed the issue of whether leadership should be centralized or decentralized, leadership questions regarding Maryland electronic documents and what should be the Maryland State collection policy for collection development.

Robert Shindle represented UB at the meeting of the Maryland History and Culture Collaborative at the Enoch Pratt Free Library on Friday, November 17 2006. Developing an internet gateway and developing communications between repositories were discussed.

Tami Smith, Government Documents Coordinator, attended to the 2006 Fall Federal Depository Library Conference & Depository Library Council Meeting which was held in Hyatt Regency Washington, Capitol Hill on October 22-25, 2006. GPO (Government Printing Office) and Federal Courts’ publishing system were two of the subjects that are discussed at the meeting.
